X-ray Services
X-ray imaging is used to check bone alignment and soft tissue to diagnose injuries or infections (e.g., imaging your leg bones to find a fracture or screening breast tissue for lumps). They can also help identify and review foreign objects that become lodged in the body. Dental x-rays are used to review the placement and health of teeth and gums, including each tooth’s roots.
We offer the following outpatient x-ray services at the Sullivan County Laurel Health Center in Laporte, PA:
- Diagnostic imaging for potential dislocations, infections, or bone fractures
- Comprehensive dental imaging, including bitewings and panoramic x-rays
- Onsite mammography days, offered through a partnership with Geisinger’s mobile mammo unit

These services are made possible in part by a grant from the Geisinger Health Foundation, which has collaborated with Laurel Health to improve access to x-ray services locally in Sullivan County, PA. To make an x-ray appointment, please call the Sullivan County LHC at 570-946-5101 or 1-833-LAURELHC (1-833-528-7354).
How to Make an X-Ray Appointment:
We are currently scheduling Laurel Health and Laurel Dental patients for x-rays. Our Sullivan office will begin accepting referrals for imaging by external offices in the coming months. To be seen by a Laurel Health provider in Laporte and/or inquire about an x-ray, call the Sullivan County LHC at 570-946-5101 or 1-833-LAURELHC (1-833-528-7354).
Standard X-rays Services:
Standard x-rays, also known as routine or diagnostic x-rays, are used to give your healthcare provider an internal snapshot of a specific area of the body. These images can help your provider evaluate your health by pinpointing the source of a symptom, diagnosing a specific problem, or evaluating the severity of a condition like whether someone’s ankle is fractured or just badly sprained.
These areas of the body are commonly imaged by standard x-rays:
- Head and neck (skull and upper spine)
- Mouth (teeth and gums)
- Chest (ribs)
- Back (spine)
- Pelvic (pelvis, hips)
- Joints in hands, wrists, elbows, hips, knees, feet, or scapula (shoulder blades)
- Limbs / extremities: arms, shoulders, legs, hands, and feet to review your femur, tibia, fibula, radius, humerus, or ulna bones.
Mammography (Breast Imaging)
The Sullivan County Laurel Health Center also provides mammography onsite through a partnership with Geisinger Foundation’s mobile mammo unit. Mammograms compress and x-ray the breasts to detect any potential cancerous tissue. They can also identify benign masses like cysts and fibroadenomas.
Most women of average breast cancer risk should receive their first mammogram beginning at age 40; if you have a family history of breast cancer or are considered at higher risk, your doctor may recommend screening sooner. 3D mammography may be recommended if you have dense breast tissue.
For a list of upcoming mobile mammography dates or for more information about mobile mammograms, please contact Geisinger’s scheduling line at 1-800-275-6401 or 570-293-7184 and ask about scheduling at the Sullivan County LHC in Laporte (217 King St., Laporte, PA).
What to Expect When Getting an X-ray:
You will be asked to answer some important health questions before getting an x-ray, such as whether you have any implants or surgical hardware in your body like a metal joint replacement. Answering yes to these questions does not necessarily mean you cannot have an x-ray. Most patients with implants or embedded metallic objects can have a standard x-ray. This information is collected because it’s important for determining whether any processes need to be modified during the x-ray and to alert the radiologist to any expected masses or metallic objects to ensure the x-ray results are read accurately.
Before your x-ray, please notify the technologist about any implants, prosthetics, surgical hardware, or embedded metallic objects. This includes:
- Joint replacements
- Pacemakers
- Mechanical valves (e.g., an artificial heart valve with metallic components)
- Metal plates or pins, such as those used for severe breaks or joint repair
- Cochlear implants or breast implants
- Foreign metal pieces in the body like shrapnel or metal shavings.
You will then be taken to the x-ray suite where you may be asked to change into a medical gown. The x-ray technologist will then position you to x-ray a specific area of the body (e.g., your knee). While x-rays themselves are quick and painless, patients may experience some discomfort during positioning if they have stiff / sore joints or are x-raying a limb to determine a possible fractured bone, so please be sure to communicate with the x-ray technologist if anything is too painful.
Once your x-ray is completed and processed, the digital film is then reviewed by a radiologist, a specialist who is trained to read and interpret x-rays. The results will be sent to your primary healthcare provider, and the office will contact you with your results. If you signed up for our secure patient portal, you may also access your results information via the MyChart patient portal online or the MyChart app on your mobile device.
For more information or to request a referral to be seen for an x-ray, please call the Sullivan County LHC at 570-946-5101 or 1-833-LAURELHC (1-833-528-7354).
Review Your X-ray Results in Our Patient Portal:
The results of your x-ray will be sent to your primary healthcare provider for review. Your Laurel Health office will then contact you directly with your results to discuss the findings. You can also review your results in our secure MyChart patient portal.
The Laurel Health Centers use a patient portal called "My Chart." This clinical platform is used by many healthcare organizations to provide patients with easy online access to their health information. MyChart lets you review test results, message your provider, or renew standing prescriptions online. You can access our patient portal online or by downloading the MyChart app on your smartphone or tablet from your device's official app store.
We understand it may be confusing to see “UPMC” mentioned in the website address for our patient portal. Our MyChart portal server is hosted by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), but despite the URL name (portal.upmc.com), this portal is not exclusively used by UPMC facilities or UPMC patients. Laurel Health previously used the MyKeyCare portal, which was created and hosted by Geisinger Health System. Laurel Health is not affiliated with or part of UPMC or Geisinger. We simply contracted to use the patient portal product they host, similar to how someone pays to use a Microsoft product like Excel without being part of or working for the Microsoft Corporation itself.
Curious why we participate in an existing patient portal platform instead of building our own? Many rural health systems opt to participate in an existing patient portal platform instead of creating their own due to the technical demands, costs, and intense security protocols required for hosting secure patient portals. If you have any questions about signing up for MyChart, please talk to our front office at 570-946-5101.
